Copenhagen (Denmark)
An icon of modern design, fabulous dining and unmissable classic landmarks, the coastal Danish capital has much to please all manner of travellers. If you’re here for a dose of Scandi culture, fill your checklist with the royal Amalienborg Palace, Rosenborg Castle, and a stroll past Nyhavn’s colourful buildings and boats. For a day of family-friendly fun, spend some time in the postcard-perfect Tivoli Gardens before taking a boat to explore the city from a different vantage point. If you're in the mood for shopping thrills, you’ll be wonderfully catered for: the city is well known for its design houses and studios, with sleek and unique decorative pieces sure to spice up your home interiors.
Hellesylt (Norway)
The next stop on your scenic cruise is Hellesylt, a small village close to the entrance of the famous Geirangerfjord. Cruise ships don’t tend to dock along here, so you’ll be in with the chance to enjoy a more sedate atmosphere as you stroll in between traditional houses and wooden churches. Be sure to snap some shots of the Hellesylt waterfall, which literally splits the village in two.
Ålesund (Norway)
Step into the fairytale-like world of Ålesund, where turrets, spires and splendid decorations fit perfectly into the staggering scenery surrounding the town. If you’re hellbent on finding the best vantage point from which to admire this surreal setting in its entirety then climb the 418 steps to the top of Mount Aksla, where you’ll be rewarded with amazing panoramic views. Other top attractions include the National Art Nouveau Centre and the island of Godøy, where you can visit Alnes, a picturesque fisherman’s village by the beach.
Flåm (Norway)
Consistently revered as one of the most beautiful parts of an already picturesque country, Flåm delights with sprawling views, cascading waterfalls, soaring mountains, lush greenery and peaceful fjords. One of its highlights is the railway which takes you through this epic landscape, but there's plenty of on-foot exploring and adventure to be done, too.
Maloy (Norway)
Located on picturesque Vagsoy Island in Vestland County, Maloy is a place where undulating mountains serve as a backdrop to a host of charming houses, a neo-gothic church, and a harbour filled with bobbing boats. Here, one can stroll the streets and sample freshly-caught seafood dishes or relax on Refviksanden, a silver sand beach that’s almost a mile long.
Kiel (Germany)
A German port city on the Baltic Sea coast, Kiel offers bags of charm. The old town is home to the mediaeval St Nikolai Church, which often hosts classical concerts, while you can shop 'til you drop on Holstenstrasse and Dänische Strasse. You can also while away some time in the Maritime Museum or head down to the harbour to watch the boats come and go on their way.
Nordfjordeid (Norway)
It’s no coincidence that Norway scores consistently high in the quality-of-life index. With the tranquil blue waters, lush valleys and snow-capped peaks of its fjords, there are plenty of reasons to live longer here. Your first stop on this fjords cruise is Nordfjordeid, where tall peaks tower above the fjords and where waterfalls plunge down the mountainside. Embrace nature along one of the well-known hiking routes, or even take a plunge in Europe’s deepest lake, Hornindalsvatnet.
