Gavin Explores Kanchanaburi & River Kwai

I kicked off my journey with three nights at the Holiday Inn Silom, a perfect blend of comfort and convenience. Located in the heart of Bangkok, it provided easy access to the city's shopping districts, street food stalls, and lively nightlife. The spacious rooms and friendly staff made it a perfect base to recharge after long days of exploring.

On my first morning, I set out to visit one of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks – The Grand Palace. Stepping into the palace grounds felt like entering a world of shimmering gold and intricate architecture. The dazzling Emerald Buddha and the elaborate murals depicting Thai mythology were simply awe-inspiring. The grandeur of the palace, coupled with the bustling energy of fellow travellers, made it an unforgettable start to my Thai adventure.

Leaving behind the bustling cityscape, I embarked on a journey to Kanchanaburi, a place steeped in historical significance. My first stop was the Death Railway Museum, a sobering reminder of the harrowing experiences of prisoners of war who built the infamous railway during World War II. The exhibits were both educational and emotional, offering deep insight into the sacrifices made during a dark period of history.

Nearby stood the Bridge over the River Kwai, a symbol of resilience and remembrance. Walking across the bridge, with the serene river flowing below, was a poignant experience. The juxtaposition of beauty and tragedy was truly moving.

A visit to Hellfire Pass was next on the itinerary. Carved through rugged mountains by forced labour under brutal conditions, this historic site was hauntingly beautiful. As I walked along the trail, guided by the audio tour, the stories of hardship and perseverance echoed through the silent pass, leaving a lasting impression on me.

After a day of historical exploration, I sought solace at the Resotel River Kwai. Nestled amidst lush greenery along the riverbank, this resort offered a serene escape. The rustic yet comfortable rooms, surrounded by nature, provided the perfect ambiance to relax and reflect on the day’s experiences.

The next day, I moved to The Floathouse River Kwai, a floating resort that redefined luxury. The thatched-roof villas floating on the river with private decks offered stunning views of the jungle-clad hills. The gentle sway of the floating villa and the soothing sound of the river created an unparalleled sense of tranquillity. Dining under the stars with the river flowing by was an unforgettable highlight.

On my return to Bangkok, I embarked on a journey aboard the Death Railway, retracing the historic tracks amidst breath-taking landscapes. The scenic ride through lush forests and over steep cliffs was both beautiful and emotional, a tribute to those who built it under unimaginable hardships.

Back in Bangkok, I spent my last three nights at the Mode Sathorn Hotel, a chic urban retreat boasting panoramic city views. The modern décor, rooftop pool, and vibrant dining options made it the perfect place to indulge in some urban luxury before bidding farewell to Thailand.
